Conjunctivitis or “pink eye” is the redness of the conjunctiva which is the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. It is usually caused by a virus and can be spread person to person.
Most common symptoms will include red eyes, itching, discharge that is white or green, waking up with crusty eyes, and sensitivity to the light. While not vision threatening, it needs to be treated with a prescription from your doctor. If, however, you suspect pink eye in a newborn baby, you should immediately call your doctor as that can be vision threatening.
